Bed bugs are tiny bloodsucking insects that creep out of their hiding places at night to feed on blood, according to the NHS. They live in tiny cracks around the bedroom, most commonly in or around the bed frame. While being bitten by a bed bug isn’t necessarily dangerous, they can be very annoying and may leave some people with bad reactions to their bites. One of the most common ways that people find out they’ve got a bed bugs infestation is by spotting red welts on their skin.
Bed bug bites can appear as small red bumps, with some minor inflammation and irritation, according to medical website Medical News Today.
The bites are usually spotted in a zigzag line across the skin, and are most commonly found on parts of the body that are exposed during sleep.
Your bed bug bites can be accompanied by a painful burning sensation, and even be surrounded by blisters or hives, it said.
“Bed bugs can bite anywhere on the body where there is skin,” it said.
“Typically, bites tend to occur on areas exposed during sleeping, such as neck, face, hands, shoulders, arms and legs.
“In most cases symptoms occur more or less immediately after the bite, but they can develop or progress over the following days as well.
“Without further irritation, symptoms typically resolve after a week or so.
“Almost all bed bug bites will produce some degree of discomfort, typically itchiness and inflammation.”
On rare occasions, you may also develop some severe reactions bed bug bites, it added.
Symptoms that require medical attention include difficulty breathing, feeling nauseous, developing a swollen tongue, and a very high fever.
If you do have some bed bug bites, you can relieve the itching by using over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams, or even by taking antihistamine tablets.
You could be at risk of a bed bugs infestation if you notice a musty smell in your room, or if you find their cases scattered around.
The first warning sign of an infestation could even be waking up to find spots of blood on your sheets.
If you do have a bed bug infestation, you should clean all bedding, curtains and clothes in hot water, and dry them on the highest setting.
Vacuum the bed and the surrounding area. After finishing, empty the contents of the vacuum into a plastic bag and take it straight out to the bin.
If your mattress is infested, it’s probably a good idea to just get rid of it and buy a new one.
