Barcelona wonderkid De Jong at odds with Nike over having ‘Frenkie’ on his shirt

FRENKIE DE JONG has already revealed he is at odds with Nike over how they want his name to look on his shirt at Barcelona.

The Dutch international will link up with the Catalan side at the end of the season from Ajax having agreed a £65million deal last month.

And the midfielder has already spoke of a potential problem prior to being officially unveiled to the Blaugrana supporters at the Nou Camp.

Speaking to Het Kontakt, the 21-year-old said: “In July I sign my official contract in Barcelona and I am also being presented to the fans and the press.

“Playing with 21 (as a squad number) would be nice, because that is kind of my number.

“The selection for the new season is not yet known so I’ll have to wait and see.

“There is an idea to play with ‘Frenkie’ on the back of the shirt. Nike prefers that from the point of view of merchandising. I’m not sure if I want to.”

De Jong also claimed he shunned an approach from Thomas Tuchel’s Paris Saint-Germain side, as he already sets his sights on retiring at the Spanish club.

He added: “Initially the interest went through my agent, who talked to the clubs, but when it became more serious, I came in.

“Paris Saint-Germain was a good option, but Barcelona has always been a dream, and I’m happy with my five-year contract.

“If I succeed, then the chances are that I will never leave, just like (Lionel) Messi.”

De Jong broke into Ajax’s first team during the 2016/17 season – establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents in Europe.

The five-cap Dutch international has featured in 18 Eredivisie games this season – chipping in with four goals and one assist.
