Barcelona icon Xavi admits he is 'preparing' to take over from Quique Setien

Barcelona hero Xavi has announced he is ready to take over at the Nou Camp if Quique Setien is sacked. Xavi had been offered the job back in January before, but opted to stay with Qatar side Al Saad. Now, however, it appears he is ready to jump at the chance to replace Setien, who could be sacked at the end of the season.

Barca suffered another setback in the La Liga title race on Sunday.

Real Madrid beating Espanyol 1-0 away from home came just 24 hours after the Catalans had drawn with Celta Vigo away.

Madrid are now two points ahead of Barca on equal goal difference, giving them the upper hand in the race for their first title since 2017.

And Barca’s demise could spell the end for Setien, who was a controversial choice when Ernesto Valverde departed the club.

Xavi was nailed-on to take over at the club he made a record 767 appearances for across all competitions.

However, the former midfielder decided the time wasn’t right for him to step into the Barca hotseat, despite Lionel Messi reportedly encouraging him to make the move.

Instead, he stayed at Qatar side Al Saad, guiding the team to third spot in the table.

And it now appears he has changed his mind and will jump at the chance to return to Barcelona, as he admitted he was preparing to take over if he receives the call from Nou Camp chiefs.
