Long before Infinity War was even released, the filmmakers confirmed that some characters would play a much larger role in Endgame. They singled out Captain America. So far, he has already been the most prominent in the early trailers, along with his long-term rival Tony Stark. Their differences famously came to a head in Civil War and they were kept separate in Infinity War. Reunited in the new trailer, it seems the Cap has stepped up to his traditional role of emotional and moral leader. He is what the team and the world need right now and Tony has fallen in line behind him.
Quite literally, in fact.
The movie is expected to bring home numerous storylines and the new posters and trailer keep pointing to Steve Rogers becoming what he was always meant to be – the leader.
Just look at the spine-chilling shot of the new Avengers walking in formation through the hangar, with one man clearly at their front. It is Steve who strides out at the head of the group, with a very subdued Tony walking behind.
So far, Tony’s voice has been heard in the message to Pepper, in moving but personal scenes. It is Steve who speaks for the Avengers.
The latest trailer expands on his earlier speeches and sets out the path for the Avengers and the certainty they will succeed.
He says: “We lost, all of us. We lost friends, we lost family. Today we have a chance to take it all back. We will, whatever it take. Whatever it takes.”
He speaks for everyone, includes everyone and leads them in thought and deed.
Yes, Tony is still the biggest figure on the poster, but Steve Rogers is front-and-centre. The increased prominence of the character is reflected by the fact that Chris Evans is second on the billing of stars after Robert Downey Jr – the highest Evans has ever been on an Avengers movie.
The movie is written and directed by the team behind Winter Soldier and Civil War, the team which has forged Captain America’s journey into the heart of the MCU.
Tony was at the heart of Infinity War, he co-ordinated the final attack on Thanos, he was defeated and hurt physically and emotionally. Now it is Captain America’s turn.
