Arsenal fans troll Van Persie after he claims Gunners are ‘close to winning the Premier League’

ARSENAL fans have laughed off Robin van Persie’s claims that the Gunners can win the Premier League next season.

The current campaign has only just ended as Manchester City lifted the title for a second consecutive year, just one point ahead of Liverpool.

The two teams were head and shoulders above any other team in the league including Arsenal who finished a whopping 28 points behind City.

A fifth place finish means they missed out on Champions League football but have one more shot at redemption against Chelsea in the Europa League final next Wednesday.

It has been 15 years since Arsenal last won the Premier League and judging by last season’s showing, most fans would agree that the wait is expected to continue into the foreseeable future.

But not according to former striker Van Persie.

When asked whether Unai Emery has the minerals to win the title, he told BBC Sport: “Of course they can, yes, because they’re close already, they’ve been close for so many years.

“It goes in periods. Now you have Manchester City, who are doing unbelievable.

“To win back-to-back titles is very special – that shows, really, that you’re a proper team.

“But it goes in phases. Maybe [City manager] Pep Guardiola will leave next year and that does something to a club.

“Maybe Liverpool will take over and they will dominate for the next few years.

“I hope and wish Arsenal all the best to win the title. I know how difficult it is.”

But Arsenal fans believe the ex-Manchester United man is on a wind-up.

One said: “He’s clearly not watching Arsenal.”

Another added: “I think he meant close to Man Utd.”

A third said: “You mean Arsenal Tula right??”
