The lyrics throughout the album are making it incredibly buzzworthy, but it’s Ghostin [sic] that has become the breakout favourite. Its title is trending on Twitter, as fans dissect who it is about, and speak about how emotional its production and words are making them. So how does it relate to Pete Davidson and Mac Miller, and what has Grande herself said about the song?

Last month, before the song had seen the light of day, she had posted on Twitter: “[it’s about] feeling badly for the person you’re with bc [because] you love somebody else. feeling badly bc he can tell he can’t compare…. and how i should be ghosting him.”

It’s been strongly speculated that it’s about Grande’s relationship with Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson in the aftermath of Mac Miller’s death.

Grande and Miller had been a long-term item but broke up in May 2018. He died months later. Davidson and Grande ultimately parted ways in October.

GHOSTIN LYRICS BY ARIANA GRANDE

I know you hear me when I cry
I try to hold it in at night
While you’re sleeping next to me
But it’s your arms that I need this time
Look at the cards that we’ve been dealt
If you were anybody else
Probably wouldn’t last a day
Heavy tears, a rain parade from hell (From hell)

Baby, you do it so well
You been so understanding, you been so good
And I’m puttin’ you through more than one ever should
And I’m hating myself ’cause you don’t want to
Admit that it hurts you

I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again
Over him
I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again
Instead of ghostin’ him

We’ll get through this, we’ll get past this, I’m a girl with
A whole lot of baggage
But I love you, we’ll get past this, I’m a girl with
A whole lot of baggage, yeah

Oh, I wish he were here instead
Don’t want that living in your head
He just comes to visit me
When I’m dreaming every now and then (And then)
And after all that we been through (And after all that we been through)
There’s so much to look forward to
What was done and what was said
Leave it all here in this bed with you (With you)

Baby, you do it so well
You been so understanding, you been so good
And I’m puttin’ you through more than one ever should
And I’m hating myself ’cause you don’t want to
Admit that it hurts you (Baby)

I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again
Over him
I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again
Instead of ghostin’ him

We’ll get through this, we’ll get past this, I’m a girl with
A whole lot of baggage
But I love you, we’ll get past this, I’m a girl with
A whole lot of baggage, yeah

There have been hundreds of thousands of tweets worldwide about the song.

One – which has had almost 1,000 likes – said: “wait so ghostin is about ariana missing mac and then feeling bad for pete bc she knows his heart is breaking bc he can’t compare in crying i feel so f**king bad for both of them i get it now.”

Another said: “THE ENDING OF GHOSTIN JUST KILLED ME WAIT.. my heart :/ probably one of the most beautiful and best songs on any one to these five albums she’s released so far. theres just no words, listening to this track was absolutely beautiful. wow.”

Some have also spotted a parallel with Miller’s song Cinderella.

The line in Miller’s song goes: “You in my dreams, thats why I’m sleeping all the time.”

Grande here sings: “He just comes to visit me when I’m dreaming every now and then.”

In My Head, another track from the new record, is also sparking lots of interest online – with fans debating whether it’s about Miller or Davidson.

The superstar has a tour pencilled in for later this year, as well as a top slot at Coachella.

thank u, next is out now.
