CROISSANT is the most challenging foreign word for Brits, with only 15 per cent of us actually pronouncing the French pastry correctly.
Moreover, nearly a third of Brits don’t attempt to speak the language of the country they are visiting.
A survey by Al Fresco Holidays looked into the puzzling pronunciations of the most common words from the continent.
It revealed that around half of attempts to pronounce foreign words resulted in errors of some sort.
The research suggested that perhaps we Brits might be as hopeless at languages as the stereotype suggests, with almost half of us admitting we feel nervous at the thought of having to speak in a foreign country.
And among the most frequently mispronounced words, croissant came up top.
