American Airlines staff call the POLICE on furious passengers after cancelling their evening flight without organising food or hotels

AMERICAN Airlines passengers who had their flights cancelled this week were surprised that police were called to the scene.

Flight 65 from Dallas to Boston was due to take off on Sunday at 8:30pm – but weather conditions meant that the flight was delayed and then eventually cancelled.

Pregnant passenger Tania Del Rio, 33, live tweeted during the incident, which saw the airline call the police on passengers who were left fuming after the cancellation.

Many of the people on the plane, which included elderly travellers and pregnant women, were left without any food or hotels despite the fact that there wasn’t another flight until the next day.

She explained how their flight was meant to be delayed for 20 minutes, only for this to be extended until 12:30am due to the bad weather as well as a new crew flying in.

Tania told Sun Online Travel: “We were upset because the AA employee handling the flight said multiple times over the speaker that if the flight were to be cancelled, they would work with us on hotels, transportation, and meals.

“It took several of them to make the call to cancel the flight. Once they did, she told us to wait for an email and provided little guidance.

“We waited about an hour for an email to arrive and it contained no information on rebooking or hotel, meals, and transportation.

“Then, the AA employee told some passengers that there would be no hotels, meals, or transportation.

“There was no announcement on the speaker, and another couple of employees came by to assist. One lady began saying that this was not acceptable and approached the desk to say so.

“The employee that had just arrived tapped her on the shoulder and asked her to be silent. He threatened to call police.”

While police were called to the situation, Tania said they just “watched for a while, nothing else”.

Staff then offered discount vouchers to some passengers, before Tania was given a hotel voucher as well as transportation.

However, with just five hours until her rebooked flight, she decided to sleep at the airport to avoid any further problems.

One man explained on Twitter how he was “sleeping at the gate” as the airline failed to help.

Hundreds of passengers were also stuck at the airport due to bad weather, with people complaining on social media.

American Airlines replied to customers on social media: “We’re sorry for the cancellation last night.

“Weather in DFW caused many delays and our team is working hard to get everyone rebooked.”

An American Airlines spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “American Airlines flight AA65 DFW to Boston was cancelled due to weather at DFW.”

The airline and Dallas Airport were unable to comment on the police being called.


Another American Airlines passenger was recently left fuming after he was prevented from boarding only for the plane to leave early.

Musician Matt Mascarenas arrived 30 minutes before his flight only to be told the gate had closed.

The plane then left 22 minutes ahead of schedule.
