Who Was Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro, How Did She Die And Did She Inspire Netflix Horror Movie Veronica?

NETFLIX’S terrifying new horror film is based on a real-life story – and it’s so creepy people can’t finish it.

But who was Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro, and how did she die? Here’s what we know…

Netflix / Sony Pictures Veronica is a terrifying Netflix horror movie based on real events in Spain

Who was Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro and how did she die?

Veronica is supposedly based on the true story of a young girl in Vallecas, south Madrid, who died after playing with a Ouija board in 1990.

According to her parents, Estefania started dabbling in the occult as a teen.

This led to her performing a seance at school – to try and contact one of her friends’ boyfriends, who had recently died in a motorbiking accident.

The ritual was interrupted by a teacher, but the group describe seeing a strange smoke going up through Estefania’s mouth and nose.

It’s inspired by the story of Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro – who died after playing with a Ouija board

Over the following six months, Estefania started suffering from seizures and hallucinations.

She would sometimes go into a rage, barking at her brothers, or would tell her parents she saw “evil” shadows walking past her room at night.

Her worried parents took their daughter to see several doctors, but none of them could find anything physically wrong with her.

A few months later, she was found dead in her bedroom – her death completely unexplained.

Her parents said they thought her death had something to do with the Ouija board, and started to experience strange goings on in their own house afterwards.

They were haunted by slamming doors, electric appliances switching on and off, and a mysterious faint whispering. Once they moved house, all this is said to have stopped.

Netflix / Sony Pictures The movie tells the story of teen Veronica and her three siblings, who try to contact their dead dad

How did Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro inspire Netflix series Veronica?

Veronica is a Spanish original movie directed by Paco Plaza – loosely based on Estefania’s story.

Viewers are especially creeped out by the fact that they don’t know what’s real and what isn’t.

The film tells the tale of a young girl called Veronica and her siblings – who try to summon their dead dad’s spirit using a Ouija board.

Netflix / Sony Pictures The movie is set over a three-day period, whereas Estefania’s hell went on for months

The ritual takes place in their family home, during the solar eclipse, and things take a dark turn when Veronica passes out.

Things then start to escalate, over a terrifying three-day period.

From Rocking The Red Carpet To Hanging Out Backstage At Glastonbury, Jo Whiley, 52, Really Is On Fire Right Now

ALTHOUGH this year’s Brit Awards will be remembered for Dua Lipa’s candy-floss ballgown, Este from Haim “interview-bombing” Cheryl and Liam and Stormzy laying into Theresa May, there was someone else who caught our eye last month.

Wearing a sparkly Roland Mouret dress and Spice-Girls-inspired platforms, Jo Whiley not only looked half her age, she was also one of the best-dressed of the night. Whatever the 52-year-old mother of four is having, we want some.

Rex Features At this year’s Brit Awardas, wearing a sparkly Roland Mouret dress and Spice-Girls-inspired platforms, Jo Whiley was one of the best-dressed of the night

We’re not sure how our new style crush slipped under the radar for so long – perhaps because she is best known for sporting mud-splattered Hunters and a poncho at Glasto. She joined Radio 1 in 1993, has been one of the most familiar voices of our music-listening lives, and was the first female DJ to present the Top 40 – but she’s certainly not just a face for radio.

Back in the ‘90s, she was the Top Of The Pops presenter we all wanted to be. Wearing midriff-flashing vests and combats as she chatted to the likes of Blur and Oasis, Jo was the ultimate I’m-with-the-band ladette.

In 1991 she married music exec Steve Morton, and the couple now live in Northamptonshire, where she grew up, with their four children – India, 25, a cook and food stylist, Jude, 18, Cassius, 16, and Coco, nine. Although she regularly tops the polls for the sexiest voice on radio and counts everyone from Bono to Chris Martin as a mate, she says she’s happiest pottering about her garden.

So what’s the secret to looking this smokin’ in your 50s? A one-time county-level swimmer, Jo is now a keen runner.

“I watch what I eat and go to the gym, but being on TV now is an amazing incentive,” she has admitted. “Saying that, I can only go so long without coffee and a croissant.”

In 2014, her Sport Relief challenge to walk, jog and run on a treadmill for 26 hours was so impressive, Coldplay alone donated £260,000.

Jo looked almost suspiciously fresh-faced at the Brits, yet she swears she’s not been under the knife: “Occasionally I’ll say: ‘Oh god, I really should do something about the wrinkles around my eyes,’ and my kids and husband will shout: ‘Don’t you ever do that!’” she has said.

“They say they’re my laughter lines and they would hate it if they weren’t there. You have no choice about getting old and you just have to go with it.

“The thing I’m incredibly grateful for is my health. The older you get, the more you see people’s bodies failing and the more it makes you appreciate what you have.”

And while her Roland Mouret number was total fashion inspo, Jo says she doesn’t always get it right. “I once wore a radical green dress to the NME Awards. As I was about to leave the house, my husband said:
