DARIUS Campbell has come a long way since he first found fame on an ITV talent show (and back when he was known as Darius Danesh).

Who is Darius Campbell?
Darius Campbell is a British singer-songwriter, actor and producer born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 19 August 1980.
The tall dark and handsome Scot grew up in the Bearsden neighbourhood of Glasgow with two younger brothers.
He attended the Glasgow Academy and studied English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh before his pop career came calling.
He was born with the name Dairus Danesh but changed his name to his mother’s maiden name Campbell in 2010.
Darius hit the headlines on December 17, 2017 when he revealed he had slipped into a coma after contracting meningitis when he drank water from the Thames.

Why did Darius change his name from Darius Danesh to Darius Campbell?
Darius was born with the last name Danesh – his last name taken from his Iranian father Booth Danesh.
By 2010, he decided to change his name to his mother’s Scottish maiden name Campbell (his mother being called Avril Campbell) as he realised he feels “so Scottish”.
“[My grandfather] is originally from Greenock and he sang The Green Oak Tree to me. He sang it in such a way it brought tears to my eyes. He was in tears at the end of it, as well,” Darius told the Daily Record in 2010.
"He said to me, 'I am proud of you. No matter where you are in the world, you'll always be a Campbell. You'll always be a Scot and you'll always be my grandson'. I am Scottish. I am proud of my heritage and I don't want to lose that,” he said.
"When I travel the world, I feel so deeply Scottish. When people know me as Darius Danesh, it doesn't reflect that I am Scottish. People say it's not a very Scottish name. But Darius Campbell reflects that I am Scottish," he added.

Did Darius Campbell appear on X Factor or Pop Idol?
Darius Campbell first rose to attention in 2001 when he appeared on the ITV talent competition Popstars – which ultimately produced winning band Hear’Say and the far more successful band Liberty X.
Despite winning over fans thanks to an impressive rendition of the Britney Spears classic …Baby One More Time, Darius failed to pass the early rounds of the competition however he returned to TV one year later in Pop Idol – taking third place behind winner Will Young and runner up Gareth Gates.
He did not compete in The X Factor – but he did appear in Popstar to Operastar in 2010 and won.

When did Darius Campbell start his music career?
Following his appearance on Pop Idol, Darius turned down a contract from Simon Cowell and signed with producer Steve Lillywhite.
He released his debut single, Colourblind, on 29 July 2002 and it hit the top of the singles chart.
His subsequent album, Dive In, was released on 2 December 2002 which reached Number 4 in the album’s chart and produced top 10 hits Rushes and Incredible (What I Meant to Say).
He released a second album, titled Live Twice, on 25 October 2004 which reached number 36 in the albums charts and included top 10 singles Kinda Love and Live Twice.

Darius Campbell appeared on Hollyoaks in 2003 – but didn’t require too much acting as he played himself.
In 2009 he appeared on BBC show Hotel Babylon playing a character named Gennaro Fazio.

What stage shows has Darius Campbell starred in?
Darius Campbell has built an impressive West End career playing Billy Flynn in a production of Chicago between 2005 and 2006.
He then starred as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls in 2007 and Rhett Butler in Sir Trevor Nunn’s adaption of Gone With The Wind in 2008.
In 2013 he landed the role of First Sergeant Milt Warden in From Here to Eternity and starred opposite Sheridan Smith in the West End production of Funny Girl in 2016.
Does Darius Campbell have a Hollywood career?
Darius Campbell has made the jump from West End star to Hollywood producer.
He was one of the producers behind the critically praised thriller Imperium – starring Daniel Radcliffe as an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a ring of white supremacists.
Darius himself seemed surprised by the film’s success, saying in 2016 as it was released: “It's been such a challenging process and there were many points when it looked like it wouldn't happen.”

Darius Campbell is an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust – a charity that helps disadvantaged young people.
His work with the trust stretches back to his Pop Idol days – when a gig in 2002 helped raise £300,000 for the charity.
More recently he attended a charity bash for The Prince’s Trust Scotland in which saw items and events being auctioned (including a dinner with Tilda Swinton) which helped raise £1.6 million in 2015.

Is Darius Campbell married?
In 2011 Darius Campbell married Canadian actress Natasha Henstridge – famous for her role in 1995 Sci-Fi horror Species.
They had first dated in 2004 and had an on-off engagement until 2010 before finally tying-the-knot on Valentine’s Day the following year.
The pair filed for divorce in July 2013 – but were spotted kissing during a romantic dinner in August 2016.
