Who is Tom Doherty?

Tom “Tomboy” Doherty is the nephew of Big Fat Gypsy star Paddy Doherty.

The aspiring boxer was 17 when he died on October 9.

The youngster lived in Green Lane, Outwood and was a much-loved member of the local traveller community.

Tom  was killed in a car crash in South Nutfield, Surrey.

He had also been tipped for international stardom in the boxing ring after being picked for the Frank Bruno Boxing Academy and winning Amateur Boxing Association competitions.

How did Tom Doherty die?

Tom Doherty, 17, died after the collision in South Nutfield, Surrey, earlier this month just days after passing his driving test.

He was driving a white Citroen Berlingo when it crashed at 7.50pm October 9. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses to the fatal crash.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned while inquiries into the death continue.

When was Tom Doherty’s funeral?

Travellers from across the globe gathered for the mass service at the Catholic Church of English Martyrs in Horley, Surrey.

Tom’s uncles and cousins carried his coffin into the service which started with Amazing Grace.

Friends and family wore Manchester United shirts, the colours of the teenager’s favourite team, with “Tomboy 17” printed on the back.

Devastated Paddy, whose dad died six months ago, today told of his heartbreak following the death of the popular 17-year-old.

In a moving tribute to his grandson, Thomas Doherty described him as ‘a living soul, a legend, a great boy’, and ‘a brilliant amateur boxer’ and sportsman.
