When Is Mother’s Day 2018, What Is Mothering Sunday And Why Do Other Countries Celebrate It On Different Dates?

Published

THERE are some dates you never want to forget because of the trouble it can cause.

Your wedding anniversary is one and Mother’s Day is definitely another so, if you are in the UK, US or much of Europe, take note of when it falls this year.

When is Mother’s Day 2018?

In the UK the exciting event is celebrated on Sunday, March 11.

In the United States and many destinations around the globe, Mother’s Day 2018 is being celebrated on Sunday, May 13.

The special day is a chance for families to show their appreciation for their mothers.

Alamy Mothering Sunday in the UK was originally a day for servants to go to their hometown and worship in their local church, with their families

What is Mothering Sunday?

Mothering Sunday is a celebration held to honour mums and maternal figures.

The day has evolved into an occasion for kids to honour and give presents to their hardworking mums.

In the UK, it was originally linked to religion but has since lost a lot of its connections to the church and is mainly a family day.

COUNTRIES CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY ON MAY 13

Anguilla, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bahamas

Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Bermuda

Bonaire, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia

Croatia, Cuba, Curaasao, Czech Republic, Ecuador

Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Grenada

Honduras, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Italy, Jamaica

Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Peru

Philippines, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa

Suriname, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Trinidad and Tobago

Turkey, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Zimba

Why does the UK have a different Mother’s Day to the US?

In the UK, the original event had nothing to do with mothers at all and it was a day for Christians to visit their “mother” church.

In the past, domestic servants were given the day off to return to their hometown and worship with their families.

On their way home, these youths would pick wild flowers to place in the church – or give to their mums.

The US event was launched separately and was not linked to religion but was dedicated entirely to mothers.

Why is Mother’s Day celebrated on different dates around the world?

In America, Mother’s Day was established in 1914 – thanks to campaigns by the mums’ groups which were established during the Civil War.

Anna Jarvis, the leader of this movement, campaigned for a May date in memory of her own mum – who had died that month.

President Wilson formalised the date, but Anna later became dissatisfied with the commercialisation around Mother’s Day.

She believed the original sentiment of love and family had been sacrificed for profit.

She said: “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”

Many other countries have since adopted America’s date.

Why does the date of Mother’s Day change each year?

Mothering Sunday in the US is an annual holiday held on the second Sunday in May, so the date slightly varies each year.

In the UK, the date is linked to Easter, which is different each year as it is determined by the lunar calendar.

The UK’s Mother’s Day always falls on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent, when people typically give up things like certain foods or bad habits for the days leading up to Easter.

Brit Couple Spent The Most Terrifying Wedding Night Ever Locked In A Shoe Shop Cupboard With Strangers After Being Caught Up In Las Vegas Gun Massacre

A BRIT couple who travelled to Las Vegas to get married spent their wedding night locked in a shoe shop cupboard after getting caught up in a deadly gun massacre.

Vanessa and Philip Dyer, from Kessingland, Suffolk, were strolling back to their hotel on October 1 last year when Stephen Paddock opened fire during the open-air Route 91 Harvest Festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

The 64-year-old’s shooting spree killed 59 people and wounded over 500 more in America’s worst mass shooting.

The couple had been together since 2000, after meeting on a night out, and both had children from previous relationships – Vanessa’s kids Ross and Jade, and Philip’s boys Nathaniel and Joshua.

After getting engaged at Christmas in 2016, the couple decided to marry in Las Vegas and booked The Little White Wedding Chapel, where celebs like Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford and Demi Moore and Bruce Willis tied the knot.

Vanessa booked a ceremony package, including a limo to the venue and the hiring of the pastor and two people to act as witnesses.

They arrived in Vegas in September 2017 and stayed at the Eygptian-themed Luxor Hotel, in a room on the 21st floor.

“The view from our balcony was amazing,” Vanessa recalled.

“We spent ages just gazing down at the strip below. There was a country music festival going on across the road and we thought about getting tickets, but there was so much else to see and do in Las Vegas, we never got around to it.”

On the day of their wedding the newlyweds returned to their hotel to change before going out for a steak dinner at the Venetian Hotel.

At around 10pm they were heading back to their room when they heard a strange popping sound.

“I suddenly felt a bit nervous, as it sounded like a machine gun, but nobody around us seemed worried – everyone was just sauntering along, taking the evening air.

“Then I heard it again and this time, other people noticed it too. People stopped walking and looked around, confused.

“It was hard to tell which direction the noise was coming from. But then began the wail of police car sirens, in the distance.

“Suddenly people were screaming and running towards us. We didn’t know it at the time, but they were the first people fleeing the Route 91 music festival – that same event we’d watched from our balcony the night before – as a lone gunman fired down on them from the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

“We started walking, fast as we could, following the crowd, back the way we’d come. Then a woman shouted at us from inside a shoe shop, telling us to go inside and take cover.”

Next thing they knew, they along with around 30 other people were being ushered inside Famous Footwear.

Staff were urging passers-by into the shop, then with everyone was safely indoors, they closed the metal security shutters and the manager locked them inside a big store cupboard at the back of the building.

“I was in shock,” said Vanessa. “It was our wedding night, and here we were, hiding out with a bunch of total strangers in a cupboard!

“There wasn’t much room in there, either – people were perching on step ladders and piles of boxes, others were sitting on the floor.

“Everyone was very scared. One young woman was retching until she threw up through fear. Other children and adults sobbed.

“For the most part, people were trying to keep a lid on their emotions, out of consideration for everyone else.

PRIME FEATURES The pair recalled how some people were retching, having escaped the harrowing scene

“The room was fairly quiet as we strained our ears, listening to the noises from outside. There were shouts and yells and we could hear more and more sirens joining in the din, getting louder as they drew closer to us.

“Whatever was going on out there, it was very near to us indeed. There was speculation that there was a terrorist attack and voices claiming police cars had been stolen. It was terrifying.”

They texted their kids and parents to let them know they were OK, and after another 10 minutes went by the gunfire stopped.

It was hours before they were let out of the cupboard, and Vanessa told how people became tired and uncomfortable in the cramped conditions.

She recalled: “They started asking to use the loo. Shop staff let us out of the cupboard, one or two at a time, so we could go. We couldn’t believe what was happening – it felt like being in a movie.

PRIME FEATURES Philip and Vanessa had watched the festival from their hotel room the night before the massacre

“We spent three hours of our wedding night hiding in that cupboard, before we were finally allowed out.

“But with much of the city still remaining under police lockdown, we couldn’t return to our hotel and took refuge in the nearby MGM Casino and Hotel, which had reopened.

“Phil went to get coffees and was gone for an hour as there was a huge queue – I started imagining all sorts of things. By the time he returned, in my head I’d become a bride and a widow, within the space of 24 hours!”

The couple finally got back to their hotel at around 6am and could see the scene of devastation from their window.

“Over at the Mandalay Bay, a single curtain billowed out of the window of the room where the shooter had been,” Vanessa recalled. “It was a chilling sight. As the death toll mounted we realised how close we’d come to a massacre.

“While Phil and me escaped physical harm, our story could so easily have been drastically different.

“Two days after the shooting, we left Las Vegas for New York. In one restaurant, a waiter who overheard us talking brought over some desserts, saying, ‘These are on the house. We’re so glad you’re safe.’

F*ck Cancer, F*ck Anxiety! Even On Holiday I Can’t Escape The Monsters Invading My Body And Mind

Published

By

OH HELLO anxiety, my old friend.

I haven’t seen you for a while, yet somehow you choose the most inappropriate to come say “hi”.

Deborah James There’s no getting away from the anxiety that plagues me – along with my cancer – even holidays aren’t an escape

It’s an all too familiar feeling.

Out of nowhere my heart starts to race, then comes the floating feeling, shaking hands and the sweats!

This time on a plane, at 40,000 ft, as I made my escape to the sunshine before round three of surgery begins next week.

It left me nervously listening to every sound, clinging to the edge of my seat at every bump.

Deborah James After a stable scan and the end of 21 rounds of chemo, I was given the green light to get a quick holiday in before more operations next week

While the blissful other passengers – my husband included – snored away, I could only sit and watch, envious of their shut eye.

Touching down, 299 refreshed human beings walked off the plane followed by me – wired, on edge, wide-eyed, hungover and panicked.

As my husband declared it a “good flight”, it took all I had not to punch him in the face.

I can’t help it, my anxiety fuels a wave of anger that just erupts.

Deborah James As I unpacked in Oman earlier this week I realised my old friend, anxiety, had come along for the ride

But, it wasn’t until I was at my hotel in Oman, opening my suitcase that I realised my old friend anxiety has come along for the ride.

Not just the plane ride, he wanted in on the holiday cocktails too!

This week is my window of cancer treatment freedom, and I’ve grabbed firmly with both hands.

Thinking of nothing is hard when stage 4 cancer is invading your body. I may look blissfully relaxed, but don’t be fooled

First came my stable scan, then the end of round 21 of chemo and then doctors revealed I could get on a plane without my cancer-ridden lungs collapsing.

Cue a quick Google search for last minute deals and a text to plead my husband to take some time off work.

I crave the sunshine, and honestly think I should have been born to a family living in the south of France.

Deborah James I may look blissfully relaxed, but don’t be fooled. It’s hard to think of nothing when cancer is invading your body

Like most busy Londoners I have self-diagnosed myself with SAD (seasonal affective disorder), that seems to peak mid-February.

That coupled with sh*tty cancer treatment meant I was almost ready to check out of my life, albeit to hibernate in bed with Netflix and Deliveroo until Spring is sprung.

Holidays are a miracle medicine in themselves.

Vitamin D in abundance, bubbles with breakfast, and some of the nasty side effects from my treatment are sent packing.

My spluttering lungs welcome the warm air that doesn’t send me into regular coughing fits.

Deborah James This anxiety just happens, a process I call the “cancer ar*ehole mind monster”, or CAMM for short

My cold spasms triggered by the chemo drugs disappear.

And let’s face it we all look better with a bit of a glow.

KNOW THE SIGNS The red flag signs that mean YOU could have bowel cancer revealed…

But, my anxiety dines out on a good holiday. He has a penchant for nice food, lunchtime cocktails and late-night revelling.

Deciding to shout, “hey, I’m STILL here,” just as I sit back, relax and try to think of nothing at all.

Thinking of nothing is hard when stage 4 cancer is invading your body.

Sun columnist Deborah James reveals how cancer has given her a newfound appreciation for life

I may look blissfully relaxed, sprawled across a sun lounger, but my mind is almost certainly elsewhere.

Here’s a typical thought-process:

“Oh, look at that couple – aren’t they sweet together” “Oh no, maybe I won’t grow old” “Maybe I won’t see another holiday if my cancer falls off a cliff” “Is that a streak of blood I see in my hand after coughing?” “My lung tumours must be growing rapidly and are out of control” “I must have a lung clot as well” “I’m about to die” “F*CK YOU cancer” “F*CK YOU anxiety.”

It just happens, the process I call the “cancer ar*ehole mind monster”, or CAMM for short.

The one that keeps you awake at 3am.

My anxiety is coming along on this cancer ride, whether I like it or not. But, there’s no damn way it’s getting into the driving seat

The one that despite an amazing setting, fabulous sunshine and awesome food makes you look at the sunset feeling grateful for the day you’ve had, while fearing what tomorrow might bring.

So, I try the distraction method.

Massages, manicures, kayaking and LOTS of cocktails.

Yes, I hear you… but I’ll deal with my borderline alcoholism once I’ve got my head round this stage 4 cancer, anxiety and the fact I might not see my kids grow up!

CAMM retreats a little bit, back into his box, but I just can’t seem to shut the lid on him.

He stares me in the eye, dines out on my fun and tries to rain on my parade.

Gemma Collins’ Celebs Go Dating ‘virgin’ Tweets Asos Begging To Model For Them – And Their Response Is Perfect

A MAN who pleaded with Gemma Collins to take his virginity has got a new dream… to be an Asos model.

Desperate Martin Macedo appeared on the first episode of E4 show Celebs Go Dating, and immediately made a beeline for the TOWIE icon.

E4 Martin Macedo asked Gemma Collins to take his virginity on Celebs Go Dating

After giving her three kisses, she asked if he wanted to go on a date with her – but he wanted more.

He said: “Of course I’d love to.

“I’d really love to lose my virginity to you.”

Despite the bonkers request, Gemma took it in her stride – and seemed pretty pleased that a strange man had propositioned her for sex within ten seconds.

E4 The GC politely told him that she was too old for him

“As sweet as it is, I am going to decline,” she smiled. “You’re 20 years younger than me, 5 years of being with me you’ll be trading me in for a younger model.”

With his sexual dreams denied, Martin now has a new ambition – to become a model for Asos.

E4 He managed to get THREE kisses out of Gemma, who is well known for being frosty to suitors

And from the message he sent, it seems that his five minutes of fame have REALLY gone to his head.

He tweeted: “Hey ASOS I am Martin and I’m a reality tv star. I would love the opportunity to model for the men’s clothing at ASOS. Who do I contact or who does my manager have to contact?”

The clothing brand hit back: “Hi Martin, thanks for your interest in strutting your stuff ASOS style.

“Most of our models come from agencies… Oh, we’ve heard @missgemcollins might be looking for models.”

Sadly for Martin, we think that’s a polite way of saying no.
