A FRESH WhatsApp update could drastically alter the way you use the app’s group chat feature.
The changes give you more control over convos that include a bunch of people.
WhatsApp WhatsApp’s new update brings a bevy of new group chat features to the Facebook-owned messaging app
New features introduced as part of the update include a new blurb for group chat, admin controls that restrict who can mess with the group’s icon, and a catch-up option, among others.
There’s also a new protection perk that blocks people from adding users to groups after they’ve repeatedly left.
The update is available now on iPhone and Android.
Read on to find out what you can do with the new features.
Set a group topic
This is a handy option that lets you set the parameters for the group chat, much like you can already do on rival messaging app Telegram.
To use it, just enter the chat session you want to customise and tap the name at the top of the screen.
This will take you to the info page, where you can add a group description using text and even emojis.
Stop pranksters from changing the group’s icon
You’ll be the admin of a group you’ve created by default, and now WhatsApp is giving you more powers to control what happens in these endless convos.
Just head in to group settings to restrict who can change the group’s subject, icon, and description.
That’ll show everyone who’s really in charge.

Look up group chat users
You can add up to 256 members to a group chat, which makes keeping track of everyone hard work.
At least it did until this update arrived.
You see that new magnifying glass in the group info tab, that’ll let you search who’s in the group.
Tapping it will also bring up the list of participants, allowing you to scroll through to view and message anyone you want.
Catch up on your group chat mentions
If you’ve not been paying attention to a group chat, you can quickly catch up on messages that mention or reply to you by using this new feature.
Just tap the new ‘@’ button that appears at the bottom right of the chat.
Remove admin controls from others
You can now seize total control of a group chat if you happen to be an admin by removing those perks from others.
Plus, group creators can no longer be removed from the group they started.
