What Is The Seven Year Itch, Is It A Real Thing And What Was The Movie All About?

MARILYN Monroe’s starring role in the 1955 film is what most people think about when mentioning The Seven Year Itch.

Pre-dating the film it was a medical term, but psychologists now use it to mark a milestone in a relationship when things begin to go stale and people begin to stray.

What is the seven year itch?

The phrase has its roots in medicine, and was used to describe contagious and irritating long-term skin problems.

Not just skin, but the term was often used when referring to any prolonged condition.

It was first used to describe the point in a marriage where men are most likely to cheat in 1952, in the play of the same name by George Axelrod which was later turned into a film.

Film Company Data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that most marriages stay together for much longer than seven years

In this context, it refers to a point most couples go through in a relationship when things begin to get boring and predictable.

The initial spark and happiness appears to have faded, and the monotony of daily life takes its toll in a relationship.

At this pivotal milestone, men were typically seen as more likely to cheat on their partners.

But not just romantically, the phrase can also be used to describe dissatisfaction with a job or house.

Is it a real thing?

Data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that most marriages stay together for much longer than seven years.

In 1963, the first year where figures are available, showed the median duration of a marriage was 11.5 years, but it did drop to 10.5 in 1970.

At its lowest point, in 1985, marriages lasted on average 8.9 years, but have crept up to 12 years in 2016, the last year data is available.

But that’s not to say a man – or woman – cheated and kept it secret, or a couple was able to work through the itch.

What was the movie about?

Released in 1955, it is a romantic comedy set in Manhattan directed by George Axelrod, who wrote the play.

Pin-up Marilyn Monroe was cast at The Girl, and she stars opposite Tom Ewell, playing Richard Sherman, who reprised his Broadway role for the film.

The movie is most famous for the scene where Marilyn is wearing her iconic white dress standing above a subway grate, causing it to blow up.

It went on to become one of the most iconic images of the 20th century and one of Marilyn’s most enduring images.

Sherman, aka Ewell, is a faithful husband living with his wife Helen (Evelyn Keyes), and son, Ricky (Butch Bernard) in the midst of a summer heatwave in New York.

Sherman sends the pair on holiday, while he settles down to enjoy some of the perks of a bachelor’s life.

But Sherman soon meets his new ditzy neighbour, Monroe, an actress and model.

He seeks help from psychiatrist Dr. Brubaker, where he confides that he fears he is succumbing to ‘the seven year itch’.

From Rocking The Red Carpet To Hanging Out Backstage At Glastonbury, Jo Whiley, 52, Really Is On Fire Right Now

ALTHOUGH this year’s Brit Awards will be remembered for Dua Lipa’s candy-floss ballgown, Este from Haim “interview-bombing” Cheryl and Liam and Stormzy laying into Theresa May, there was someone else who caught our eye last month.

Wearing a sparkly Roland Mouret dress and Spice-Girls-inspired platforms, Jo Whiley not only looked half her age, she was also one of the best-dressed of the night. Whatever the 52-year-old mother of four is having, we want some.

Rex Features At this year’s Brit Awardas, wearing a sparkly Roland Mouret dress and Spice-Girls-inspired platforms, Jo Whiley was one of the best-dressed of the night

We’re not sure how our new style crush slipped under the radar for so long – perhaps because she is best known for sporting mud-splattered Hunters and a poncho at Glasto. She joined Radio 1 in 1993, has been one of the most familiar voices of our music-listening lives, and was the first female DJ to present the Top 40 – but she’s certainly not just a face for radio.

Back in the ‘90s, she was the Top Of The Pops presenter we all wanted to be. Wearing midriff-flashing vests and combats as she chatted to the likes of Blur and Oasis, Jo was the ultimate I’m-with-the-band ladette.

In 1991 she married music exec Steve Morton, and the couple now live in Northamptonshire, where she grew up, with their four children – India, 25, a cook and food stylist, Jude, 18, Cassius, 16, and Coco, nine. Although she regularly tops the polls for the sexiest voice on radio and counts everyone from Bono to Chris Martin as a mate, she says she’s happiest pottering about her garden.

So what’s the secret to looking this smokin’ in your 50s? A one-time county-level swimmer, Jo is now a keen runner.

“I watch what I eat and go to the gym, but being on TV now is an amazing incentive,” she has admitted. “Saying that, I can only go so long without coffee and a croissant.”

In 2014, her Sport Relief challenge to walk, jog and run on a treadmill for 26 hours was so impressive, Coldplay alone donated £260,000.

Jo looked almost suspiciously fresh-faced at the Brits, yet she swears she’s not been under the knife: “Occasionally I’ll say: ‘Oh god, I really should do something about the wrinkles around my eyes,’ and my kids and husband will shout: ‘Don’t you ever do that!’” she has said.

“They say they’re my laughter lines and they would hate it if they weren’t there. You have no choice about getting old and you just have to go with it.

“The thing I’m incredibly grateful for is my health. The older you get, the more you see people’s bodies failing and the more it makes you appreciate what you have.”

And while her Roland Mouret number was total fashion inspo, Jo says she doesn’t always get it right. “I once wore a radical green dress to the NME Awards. As I was about to leave the house, my husband said:
