Thief in critical condition after blowing himself during botched raid on cashpoint

A THIEF is in critical condition after accidentally blowing himself up when he tried to rob an ATM.

CCTV footage shows the man fly backwards from the force of the blast and remain collapsed on the ground.

Another man can then be seen poking around the debris before standing over the fallen man.

He appears to check if he is okay and tugs him a couple of yards away from the destroyed cashpoint.

However, seeing the man unresponsive, he walks away with a bag in his hand.

The fallen man, 51, was taken to hospital on Thursday night following the explosion in Clydebank.

Medics at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital said he was in a critical condition.

The man who walked away is understood to have been arrested by police.

Officers said a 48-year-old and is being held custody in connection with the incident.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said:””A 48 year old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with the incident.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
