Smoking a month before or after having a boob job could make your nipples FALL OFF, according to top surgeon

A SURGEON has revealed how smoking a month before or after you get a boob job can make your nipples FALL OFF.

Dr Anthony Youn recently took to his blog to describe his experience treating a patient who’d lost her nipples because she hadn’t stopped smoking before her cosmetic surgery.

He wrote: “In my memoir In Stitches, I told the story of a smoker whose nipples turned purple while undergoing a breast lift surgery.

“Purple is the precursor to black. Black is the precursor to falling off.”

Yikes.

According to Dr Youn, this happens because the nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke causes our blood vessels to constrict.

If this happens and you’re having surgery where the blood supply is significantly altered (for example with boob jobs, face lifts, and tummy tucks), this poses a huge risk.

If blood flow to a particular body part becomes restricted, that part of the body effectively dies – turning purple, then black and then falling off.

Dr Youn previously told MailOnline that smoking before or after surgery can mean that cigarette carbons act as a “virtual tourniquet” – causing the nipple to die from necrosis.

Dr Youn says that he uses leech therapy to treat this (which works by restoring blood flow and sucking out clotted blood), while other doctors may surgically remove the nipples before reconstructing the area.

Shockingly, if a patient decided not to receive either of these treatments, their nipples may fall off on their own over the course of several weeks.
