Simon told the studio audience: "There's a really good chance you'll come out with a hit record."

Host Dermot O'Leary couldn't resist poking fun at Simon's recent accident, joking that the head judge is sick of steps this week.

The bruised music mogul returned to the X Factor for the first time since his horror fall yesterday as he oversaw rehearsals.

He missed the first week of live shows last week after collapsing at his London mansion and being rushed to hospital.

Doctors advised the 58-year-old to rest at home, but the star is now back at the X Factor studios coaching his category, the groups.

However the effects of the last week were visible to see, as some bruising could be made out on Simon's neck near his facial hair.

Other than that though, the star seemed in good spirits as he chatted to his acts Rak-Su, The Cutkelvins, Sean & Conor Price and Jack & Joel.

Simon was also joined by his fellow judges Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh.

That is the new name Nicole has given her category – the Overs – which includes Kevin Davy White, Matt Linnen and Tracy Leanne Jefford.

Meanwhile Louis was all smiles as he coached the boys ahead of Saturday nights live show.

The contestants will all be glad to see Simon back, despite doctors advising him to take it easy.

He was alone with son Eric, three, whilst partner Lauren Silverman was in the US with her children.

Simon was taken to hospital where tests were done on him and he was released later that day.

He was advised not to fulfil work commitments that weekend and former guest judge Alesha Dixon filled in for him on Sunday’s show with just Louis, Sharon Osbourne and Nicole on the Saturday’s programme.
