ZIMBABWE’S hated leader Robert Mugabe has this afternoon finally quit after 37 years in power.

Wild jubilation broke out on the streets and in parliament as ordinary Zimbabweans and MPs alike celebrated the downfall of the tyrant.

And fearsome Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa – nicknamed “The Crocodile” – is expected to take power within two days.

Despot Mugabe resigned in a letter submitted to parliament, Speaker Jacob Mudenda said.

Mugabe wrote: “I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation… with immediate effect.

“I have resigned to allow a smooth transfer of power. My decision is voluntary on my part.”

The news comes just hours after  proceedings started today against the stubborn tyrant, who is accused of allowing his wife Grace “to usurp constitutional power”.

The pariah president ignored an imposed deadline of noon yesterday to quit, after being axed by his own ruling following last week’s military coup.

This afternoon, the country’s parliament opened a session to begin the process of impeaching Mugabe, which should lead to him being stripped of office.

Parliament speaker Jacob Mubenda gave permission for a joint session of the House of Assembly and the Senate to debate a motion that would trigger impeachment proceedings against Mugabe.

“This motion is unprecedented in the history of post-independence Zimbabwe,” Mubenda declared.

The military seized power and tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets to demand the 93-year-old’s resignation.

‘FREE FROM OPPRESSION’

Prime Minister Theresa May released a statement saying: “The resignation of Robert Mugabe provides Zimbabwe with an
opportunity to forge a new path free of the oppression that characterised his rule.

“In recent days we have seen the desire of the Zimbabwean people for free and fair elections and the opportunity to
rebuild the country’s economy under a legitimate government.

“As Zimbabwe’s oldest friend we will do all we can to support this, working with our international and regional partners to help the
country achieve the brighter future it so deserves.”

Mugabe’s failure to step down came a day after he shocked his people with a show of defiance when he had been expected to resign.

His enemies – led by ruthless former deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa – have launched the moves to impeach him amid rising fears of civil strife.

Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party summoned its MPs to thrash out a plan to forcibly end the despot’s brutal 37-year reign.

The motion, which could take just two days to complete,  was presented to the nation’s parliament today – meaning the leader could be removed from office by Wednesday.

Under Zimbabwe’s constitution, impeachment is allowed on the grounds of “serious misconduct”, “violation” of the constitution or “failure to obey, uphold or defend” it, or “incapacity”.

Speaking to the BBC, former deputy Mnangagwa said: “The main charge is that he has allowed his wife to usurp constitutional power when she has no right to run government.

“But she is insulting civil servants, the vice president, at public rallies. They are denigrating the army – those are the charges.”

Current vice-president Phelekezela Mphoko was expected to assume the top role.

But Mphoko is a known supporter of the tyrant’s hated 52-year-old shopaholic wife “Gucci” Grace, who is also facing prosecution over her sprees using public cash and ordering purges of rivals.

Mnangagwa’s firing two weeks ago sparked the national crisis when army chiefs feared Mugabe was about to enthrone Grace.

Mugabe lost the support of influential war veterans – who fought in the conflict which led to independence from Britain in 1980.

CROCODILE SEIZES ZIMBABWE

By Danny Collins

So fearsome is the reputation of Emmerson Mnangagwa that even Zimbabwe’s reviled despot Robert Mugabe has been forced to condemn his crimes in the past.

Labour MP Kate Hoey once said of Chelsea-supporting Mnangagwa: “[He is] probably the one person in Zimbabwe who inspires even greater terror [than Mugabe].”

Violence against the white government of Rhodesia – that would later be renamed Zimbabwe – earned him the nickname ‘The Crocodile’, as well as a spell in prison.

The Crocodile acted as Mugabe’s muscle during the 70s in a bid to gain independence from Britain – the last African nation to leave the British Empire.

Named Mugabe’s security chief, he led a band of North Korean-trained special forces who carried out unimaginable acts of cruelty against Ndebele tribes in the western Matebeleland regions of Zimbabwe during the mid-80s.

Even Mugabe admitted the 20,000 deaths his protege’s forces caused were unacceptable, labelling it a “moment of madness”.

THIS is the moment a terrorist yanks up his cloak and reveals his Kalashnikov before unleashing a deadly gun and suicide massacre at a Catholic church in Pakistan.

At least nine people are dead and 56 wounded in the horrific attack claimed by ISIS on a Sunday service in Quetta city less than a week before Christmas.

CCTV footage released by the police showed the attackers, both carrying guns, approaching the church gates.

One of them is wearing a brown cape from which he produces the automatic rifle as he nears the gate.

His accomplice can then be seen following behind and he appears to trip up before getting back on his feet.

Meanwhile, the first gunman appears to be struggling to open the gate.

But with help from the other terrorist, he manages to scramble over into the church’s compound.

The second militant is then let in.

Worshippers sitting at tables outside the church are then running from the scene after spotting the killers.

Police guards stationed at the church entrance and on its roof killed one of the bombers.

But the second attacker detonated his explosives-filled vest outside the prayer hall just after Sunday services began, said Sarfraz Bugti, the provincial home minister.

ISIS has claimed the attack, the group’s Amaq news agency said in an online statement, without providing any evidence for its claim.

Officials have yet to confirm who is responsible.

Police guards at the church exchanged fire with the attackers before they could enter the main sanctuary, said local police chief Moazzam Jah.

He said the attackers clashed with security forces, with one assailant killed at the entrance while the other made it inside.

“There were nearly 400 people inside the church,” Jah said. “We killed one of them, and the other one exploded himself after police wounded him.”

Jah said the venue – Bethel Memorial Methodist Church – was on high alert as Christian places of worship were often targeted by Islamist extremists over Christmas.

Baluchistan has long been the scene of an insurgency by separatists fighting against the state to demand more of a share of the gas- and mineral-rich region’s resources.

They also accuse the central government of discrimination.

The Taliban, Sunni Islamist militants and sectarian groups linked to al Qaeda and the ISIS group also operate in the strategically important region, which borders Iran as well as Afghanistan.

Hospital officials said two women were among the dead while another five women and two children were among the wounded.

A young girl in a white dress sobbed as she recounted the attack to Geo television, saying many people around her were wounded.

Aqil Anjum, who was shot in his right arm, told The Associated Press he heard a blast in the middle of the service, followed by heavy gunfire.

“It was chaos. Bullets were hitting people inside the closed hall,” he said.

A MARRIED maths teacher has been accused of having oral and full sex with her 14-year-old male student inside the school.

Jessica Langford, 32, denies three counts of sexual battery and three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor at the Ohio middle school.

The teacher and mum-of-one, who had taught at Miamisburg Middle School for nine years, allegedly performed oral sex on as well as receiving it.

Fox News reports she also had sex with the teen twice during May 23 at the school, Cleveland.com reported.

The student allegedly told another teacher about the sexual encounters with Langford and it was reported.

Miamisburg Superintendent Dr David Vail: “We did our own little, quick investigation at that point.

“Because of that fact, we were mandated to report it to the Ohio Department of Education.”

Langford resigned her position in late May after allegations of sexual misconduct had come to light.

She was the second teacher to be busted for alleged sex with a student in the Miami Valley area during a two-week span in November.
