Tempers flared following a challenge from Gustavo Cuellar on Palmeiras captain Dudu

With the scores at 1-1, Palmeiras skipper Dudu reacted hastily to a challenge from Flamengo midfielder Gustavo Cuellar.

The 25-year-old failed to dispossess the Brazilian international with a sliding tackle down the right flank, before winning the ball with a seemingly perfect challenge.

Dudu then went down clutching his ankle, before springing up immediately to shove Cuellar in the back – sparking ugly scenes from both sets of players.

Even the substitutes from the dugout raced onto the pitch in an attempt to diffuse the situation as tensions boiled over at the Allianz Parque.

Cuellar and Dudu were both given their marching orders by the referee, as too were Palmeiras duo Jailson and Luan, and Flamengo pair Henrique Dourado and Jonas.

Willian had given the home side the lead in just the fifth minute with a left-footed strike from close range into the bottom corner.

Before teenage defender Matheus equalised in the 54th minute with a header that nestled into the top right corner.

Real Madrid youngster Vinicius Junior missed a string of opportunities for Mauricio Barbieri’s men, as Flamengo failed to extend their four-point lead at the top.
