But the Manchester United midfielder’s wage demands were too much for Marseille.

Yaya Toure is also said to be a Marseille target after leaving Manchester City.

Belgium ace Fellaini is a free agent on June 30 and has rejected a new deal at Old Trafford.

AC Milan confirmed they are in the chase for his signature.

Sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli said: “He could be an important player. In fact, he is an important player.

“We know that he is not renewing his contract with Manchester United, but it is difficult to say if we have closed it.

“He has important parameters. We will do something in that role, but with maximum discretion.

“We will close a deal first before we announce a player.”

Atletico Madrid are also thought to be interested in snapping up Fellaini, who scored five goals in 22 United appearances this season.
