Why was Shane Dawson accused of being a paedophile?

YouTube channel Pop Blast uploaded a video called “I think Shane Dawson is a pedophile. Here’s my proof.”

The video contained clips of Shane appearing on a podcast in which he said he Googled “naked babies” and then went on to describe them as “sexy”.

During the same podcast, allegedly recorded six years ago, he was heard talking about meeting a six-year-old girl with more than 100,000 Instagram followers.

In the shocking audio he said:

“I said OK, why do you have so many followers? And she said, ‘Oh I’m a cheerleader’ Oh really? And she shows me her Instagram which are like… First of all, I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, but she’s like sexy.”

He then goes on to explain his “justification for paedophilia”.

“Here’s my justification for paedophilia – people have foot fetishes, people have fetishes about everything, that’s fine, do your thing,” he says.

“So why is it when somebody looks at and Googles like ‘naked baby’ on Google and jerks off to it, they can get arrested? I don’t understand that.”

Staggeringly he continues: “Here’s the worst part of it, I actually went to Google… I didn’t want to see child porn but I just thought okay let me pretend like I’m a paedophile for a second.

“So I typed in ‘naked baby’. First of all I don’t know why anybody would be turned on by that. But they were sexy. I’m kidding.”

At this point his co-host interjects to say: “You can literally get arrested for saying this!”

After the content went viral, Shane recorded a video apologising for the disturbing jokes.

“I’m going to apologise first,” Dawson says in the video. “I am sorry that I used to make really f***ing s***ty jokes. I am sorry that I was, like, so f***ing insecure and, like, playing this character … this guy who’s f***ing crazy and will say anything and tries to make people laugh by shocking them. That was my thing, that’s what I used to do on YouTube … I have changed so much as a person; as a creative, and as a writer, and as a director.

“The stuff that I was saying back in those times, I would never say now, because I don’t think that’s funny. Listening to that clip just now, I didn’t laugh; I didn’t think it was funny.”

The Pop Blast channel has since been deleted by YouTube “due to multiple or severe violations of YouTube’s policy against spam, deceptive practices and misleading content or other Terms of Service violations”.
