How did James McAvoy get buff and what did he Google?
Scottish actor James, 38, was barely recognisable when he stepped out in Philadelphia with his new buzz cut and buff physique.
Speaking to Mr Porter, the actor admitted he didn’t use any professional trainers, but simply searched on Google for workouts online – as well as upping his calorie intake.
However, he admitted he was still ‘chuffed’ with the results, explaining: “I Googled, ‘Good way to put on muscle quick’ then went to a gym and did it myself.
“I also ate between 5,000 and 6,000 calories a day. Instead of eating two eggs in the morning, I’d eat eight.

“Then a snack of chicken breast. Then two chicken breasts for lunch and a steak for another snack. Then two salmon steaks for dinner.”
“In a relatively short space of time, I got bigger. I wasn’t huge but I was quite chuffed with myself.”
If you Google the same phrase that James did, numerous ideas for bulking up come up.
According to the top article, by Men’s Fitness, 10 ways to “build muscle faster” include:
- Set strength goals
- Keep a food journal
- Focus on compound exercises
- Go to bed 30 minutes earlier
- Drink a protein shake during training
- Work each muscle two to three times per week
- Don’t neglect your legs
- Eat more on “off” days
- Don’t fear carbs
- Weight yourself each week
Meanwhile, another article high up in the search, by The Telegraph, speaking to Personal trainer Scott Laidler, says that hypertrophy and “damaging the [muscle] fibres that you start with” is key to bulking up – with heavy resistance training four to five days per week, broken down by body part, being the best way to go about this.
What did James McAvoy look like before?
Fans are used to a much slighter James, who was usually seen with a thick head of dark hair – or completely bald in the X Men films.
James has overhauled his image and shaved his hair for his new role in Flick Glass.
James has been in Pennsylvania filming the new movie, which sees him reprise his famous Kevin Wendell Crumb role – a dissociative identity disorder sufferer with no less than 23 different personalities.
All of his personalities feature something dangerous for his captives, and one even takes on a creature known as The Beast.
