WITH a new year comes fears that your child won’t be accepted in to the best school.
Over half a million school kids have now found out whether or not they will be trundling off to their parents’ choice of primary school in September – but it won’t be good news for everyone.

What should you do if your child isn’t accepted into their first choice of primary school?
Anxious parents will have received their hotly-anticipated letter telling them which school their child got into.
Half a million families found out what school their child, or children, had got into.
As parents either celebrated or commiserated after receiving letters on ‘national offer day’, April 16, it seems more parents may have got what they wished for.
In the capital, where competition is fierce, initial statistics show more children had got the place they’d hoped for as there were less children applying for places, easing pressure.

The Pan London Admissions Board, which co-ordinates school admissions in the capital, revealed London boroughs received 96,681 applications for primary school places this year.
That’s 2.3 per cent fewer than last year.
And around the country 72 per cent of local authorities revealed there had been an increase in the number of children getting their first preference school, when compared to last year.
But even if you have missed out, all is not lost.
Parents still lodge appeals and complaints in a bid to get them in to their most preferred school.
If children are denied a place at their first choice, parents have the right to appeal.

Firstly, however, it is important to accept a place your child has been given even if it is not the top choice, to ensure they have a school for the following September.
Once you have accepted the place, get on the waiting lists for other schools you would prefer.
When do parents find out?
Anxious parents will likely be in the process of lodging appeals after letters were sent out on Monday.
Councils sent out confirmations for primary school on April 16, with secondary school letters already sent out for March 1.
Monday has been dubbed ‘national offer day’ as up and down the country parents have finally found out what school their child got into.
If you have applied online for your child’s school, check your local council’s website for more information or to find out your results.

What to do if your child has no school offers?
You can get on the waiting list for schools even if they were not in your initial applications.
If your child hasn’t got a place, you should contact your local council for schools that have availability.
You can keep an eye on which schools have places on the council website too.
How to appeal if your child doesn’t get into their preferred primary school?
Since 1999, admission authorities have been required to only accept a ratio of 30 kids to one class.
Every parent or guardian has the right to appeal against a decision by a school to not offer a place, however, if they feel a mistake has been made.
You can appeal for schools that you initially applied for, with each school needing a separate application form that can be found on your local council website.

You may have grounds to successfully appeal if:
the admission arrangements haven’t been properly followed the admission criteria aren’t legal according to the school admissions appeal code the decision to refuse your child a place wasn’t reasonable
Once you send off your appeal, both parents and the admissions authority should be given the chance to explain their side.
The appeals panel will then make the decision as to whether or not the school’s admission criteria were met.
If a school still has places but declined an application, the panel will weigh up their reasons for refusal against the family’s case.
Typically the success rate for these appeals is less than 15 per cent.
A ‘cheeky’ Bride Invited Her Uni Pal To Her Wedding – Just So They Can Chauffeur Her Elderly Relatives
A FRIEND has questioned why they were invited to a wedding of an old uni mate after realising they had been put down to drive the bride’s elderly relative there.
The thread on Mumsnet revealed how presumptuous the bride was, in a post entitled: “To think that the bride’s been cheeky here!”
Getty – Contributor The bride has been branded cheeky
The potential guest said they had met a girl while studying at university, and despite them being “not close at all”, was kind and invited them to the evening part of her wedding.
The poster said: “As the wedding is hours away, there’s only one hotel close by with ridiculous rates, and I’d only be invited from 8:30pm anyway, I’m planning on not going.
“I went to go and click the ‘sorry, can’t make it’ option on her RSPV website when I saw the ride share list on there.”
Curious, they clicked on it to have a peek.

To their horror they realised they had been put down to drive someone – without being asked.
They continued: “I’ve been put down to drive (what appears to be) one of her elderly relatives from my hometown.
“Never offered this, have never met the elderly relative in question, haven’t really spoken to the bride about the wedding at all.”
They soon realised the bride had seemingly turned all their friends into taxis, with another person also down as a chauffeur.
The thread added: “Messaged another friend who’s been invited to evening early and is down on the list to rideshare with someone elderly, same thing with her!
“Not sure if I’ve been invited as a friend or because I’ve got a car and happen to be from the same place as her relative!”
Getty – Contributor The friend never offered to drive anyone to the wedding
They said they’d “never declined an invite so fast”, and their decision was supported by the majority of those who replied, with the thread racking up more than 300 comments.
Most people couldn’t get over how much front the bride had for assuming they would drive an old relative without asking first.
One person wrote: “F***me even by Mumsnet standards of cheeky f*****s that’s quite something.”
Another said: “She wins cheeky f****r Olympics for sure.”
This person handed it to the bride for trying, saying: “Massively cheeky! But I have to admit I’m kind of impressed with that level of planning and cheek!!”
And this response was straight to the point: “It does appear as if you’ve been invited only to be this relative’s chauffeur.”
The bride was torn to shreds online, with this person saying: “Cheeky cow! Presumably she’s also expecting you to take elderly relative home after the reception too?”

How To Sleep In Hot Weather – 12 Top Tips For Staying Cool In Bed During A Heatwave
TEMPERATURES have soared over the past few days, with Brits basking in the hottest April day since 1949 – and the mercury is still rising.
By day it’s all lapping up the sun and topping up on vitamin D levels, but by night the hot weather can prove miserable. Here we reveal how to avoid baking in bed…
Getty Images If the heat has been keeping you awake at night, be sure to try some of these simple solutions
How can I get to sleep in hot weather?
Getting to sleep when it’s hot and stuffy can be a nightmare.
But if you’re craving a few Zzz’s there are a few ways you can help yourself to drift off despite the heat…
1. Don’t go commando
As tempting as it may be, don’t whip off your undies just because it’s sunny.
Instead, sleep in cotton pyjamas, to let your skin breathe and ensure that any sweat is soaked up, rather than left on your body.
2. Splash your sheets
Giving your bedding a very light misting of water can make all the difference when you’re struggling to sleep on a hot day.
Don’t soak your bed, but sleeping in some slightly damp sheets could help to cool you down and keep you comfy.
Getty Images Cooling your curtains, turning off a plug or keeping your PJs on could be the difference between sweet dreams and a sweaty nightmare
3. Cool your curtains
Another use for your slightly damp sheets involves spraying them with water and then draping them over an open window.
This lets the breeze blow some refreshingly cool air around your room, without the added noise of using a fan.
4. Switch off
Turn off all the plug sockets you can to help keep things cool – and save some energy whilst you’re at it.
Electrical sockets kick out a surprising amount of heat, and they could be the difference between a good night’s sleep and a sweaty nightmare.
5. Ice some rice
Make a cold water bottle which won’t melt all over you by filling a sock with rice, and then freezing it.
Press this against your sensitive pulse points – found on the wrists, ankles, tops of your feet and your temples – to instantly turn the heat down a notch.
6. Watch what you drink
Boozing before bed is never a great idea – but your sleep will be affected even more when it’s hot.
Instead, make sure you keep a cool glass of water by your bedside to stop you from overheating in the night.
Getty Images Slightly damp bedding will help to keep you cool in the summer months, just don’t overdo it with the moisture
7. Chill your bedding
If you’re really struggling, you can always stuff your bedding in a bag and pop it all in the freezer for a few minutes before you go to bed.
This will guarantee you the perfect head-start when it comes to getting a great night’s sleep, letting you drift off effortlessly even as the mercury keeps on rising.
8. Go it alone
If you usually share a bed with someone, it’s time to get ruthless.
It’s obvious, but you’ll stand a better chance of keeping cool if you have the bed to yourself, and sleeping apart may be the only way to save your sanity.
9. Get low
Hot air rises, so get down as low as you can to make sure you’re surrounded by cool air.
Sleep on the floor, or even head downstairs, if you’re getting desperate to escape the heat.
