England Boss Gareth Southgate Is Overseeing Revolution Not Evolution… He’s Not Afraid And Got Rid Of Old Guard

GARETH SOUTHGATE is overseeing a revolution – rather than evolution.

The squad today has proved beyond doubt that Southgate is not afraid to make a big decision.

News Group Newspapers Ltd Chelsea’s Gary Cahill is one of only five survivors from the 2014 World Cup squad

Not afraid to bin an experienced player. Not afraid to bring up a rookie.

Unbelievably, Gary Cahill, Phil Jones, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Danny Welbeck are the only survivors of Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad which embarrassed themselves at the 2014 World Cup.

And only one of the seven standby players for Brazil, John Stones, is included.

Chelsea defender Cahill is only in the squad because Liverpool’s Joe Gomez in injured.

Southgate has always insisted he wanted fit players ahead of the World Cup, unlike previous years when we have taken crocks.

He cannot trust the talented but injury-prone Jack Wilshere while Adam Lallana – despite playing well for England when fit – is not 100 per cent.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has yet to feature in a senior squad until today but Southgate clearly has belief in the Liverpool teenager.

Despite previous tournaments, I am cautiously optimistic even though only have three goalkeepers with a combined total of nine caps is a risk.

Southgate has got rid of most of the old guard – so this lot cannot do any worse.

My prediction is that England will get to the quarter-finals.
