Referee Mike Dean did not even book Alonso but Mark Hughes claimed the challenge almost broke his player’s leg.

And the official was slammed as “arrogant” by Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier for failing to act on the flashpoint.

Now, having reviewed the footage, FA chiefs have decided to charge the 27-year-old Spaniard retrospectively.

He could miss the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton and Premier League clashes against Burnley and Swansea.

Diego Maradona Vs Michel Platini Was The Lionel Messi-cristiano Ronaldo Rivalry Of Mid-1980s When Napoli Vs Juventus Was Europe’s Big Game

THE Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry will go down in history as the game’s greatest-ever.

In the past decade, the pair have won five Ballon d’Or awards each — and have re-written the records with their incredible goal scoring exploits.

But, 35 years ago, the world’s top two players were fighting for the title in Italy.

In 1984, Diego Maradona arrived at Napoli as the best player on the planet, but with plenty of baggage.

He had recently caused a riot in the Copa del Rey final in front of 100,000 fans in his last match for Barcelona — after seeking revenge on the player who’d broken his ankle 12 months earlier.

Juventus, AC Milan, Inter, Fiorentina were alerted to Maradona’s availability but deemed him not worth the risk, given the problems which came with him.

Eventually, Napoli, who had finished a point above the relegation places a season, took the gamble — and they had to empty the banks in the city to finance the world record £5million deal.

The southern Italians were a million miles away from Serie A’s main side, Juventus who, in Michel Platini, boasted a player who had won the Ballon d’Or a year earlier, would win it again that year — and then become the first man in history to win it for a third time in a row.

But, upon his arrival, Maradona transformed Napoli and made them believe they could compete with the likes of Bianconeri for the biggest trophies in the country.
