THIS beautiful, powerful and quite wonderful animated film tells the story of Parvana, a young girl living in Kabul under a Taliban regime.

When her handicapped father is unfairly sent to prison, she is forced to live her life as a boy in order to feed the family as women are not allowed to buy food, enter shops or even leave the house without a man as escort.

She finds her friend Shauzia living the same double life and together they embrace their new-found freedom.

In Pan’s Labyrinth-style escapism, she often disappears into the elaborate tales she dreams up for her younger brother and is  determined to reunite her family against the odds.

While this may not sound like your cup of tea – I urge you to give it a go.

It is thoughtful, wonderfully made and tells a story we all need to hear, whether we like it or not.
