Amber Rudd says scandal will ‘clear out’ sleazy behaviour in Westminster – as two MPs call for Damian Green to quit over porn and harassment allegations

AMBER Rudd has claimed the sleaze scandal will lead to a “clear out” of sleazy behaviour in Westminster – as two Tory MPs call for Damian Green to quit while an investigation takes place.

The Home Secretary insisted the end result of the spate of abuse claims that has rocked Parliament will be positive for politics in the long-term.

But with one of her Cabinet colleagues Sir Michael Fallon already resigning in disgrace the pressure is being turned up on Mr Green, the First Secretary of State, to stand down while the inquiry into him takes place.

The de facto deputy Prime Minister was accused of touching up a journalist and sending her inappropriate messages last week, claims he strenuously denies.

Mr Green, 61, was rocked by a fresh scandal last night after it was claimed police found “extreme” pornography on his computer when they raided his Parliamentary office.

However he angrily refutes the accusation, saying: “This story is completely untrue and comes from a tainted and untrustworthy source.”

Today the Tory MP Anna Soubry repeated her call for him to be suspended whilst the Cabinet Office investigates the claims against him.

And fellow backbencher Heidi Allen also said Mr Green should stand aside while the investigation takes its course.

She told ITV1’s Peston on Sunday: “If you’re innocent and you have nothing to worry about then let the process take its natural course and the right will come out in the end.”

However Ms Rudd failed to go that far, saying we “shouldn’t rush” to do anything until the inquiry takes place.

But she did confirm the ongoing Whitehall probe has been widened to look at the allegations about pornographic material.

She said: “I know that the Cabinet Office is going to be looking at this tomorrow along with the wider inquiry about Damian, and I do think that we shouldn’t rush to allege anything until that inquiry has taken place.”

And she also refuted claims that the increasingly worsening fallout could bring down Theresa May’s administration.

Ms Rudd told BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show: “Absolutely not.”

She added: “I think it is something that will take place in terms of clearing out Westminster of that sort of behaviour.

“And I think that Westminster afterwards, including the Government, will be better for it.

“When we are confident that men and women can work in a respectful environment and people who have been on the receiving end of abuse of power can come forward, that will be a positive thing.”

And the Home Secretary said Westminster was undergoing a “watershed moment”, after wave after wave of allegations have been reported in recent days.
